About the Artwork:
The original painting “The Trophy: Tribute to Cecil”  is a 19 x 27″ watercolor on yupo painted in 2015.    The piece was inspired from the sad story of Cecil the lion that was hunted, wounded, and died a slow death all for a hunter’s ego to mount this aging beast’s head on his wall.

From my research, Cecil had this signature mane that was gold and black that made him a recognizable tourist attraction on the reserve.  Upon seeing the photos of Cecil’s corpse, I was sadden to see how dull and bland his beautiful mane was in death and wonder if only the hunter would have appreciated the beauty in this living breathing creature and realized that he could never preserve that in death in a taxidermy state mounted on his wall.
